“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
This is hard for me. To simply be still and not do anything and not think anything — it’s such a struggle. I’m learning to be still and spend time just being in God’s presence. It takes intentionality and surrender. Surrender of thoughts and emotions, my agenda, desires and expectations — all into the capable, loving, provisional hands of the merciful Heavenly Father.
He recently turned my path around. I had finally stepped out of the way so God could step in and carve a new path for me. But I had to be still and listen for His voice and direction. Not just once — but continuously. I had to choose to set aside time and space to experience stillness in spirit, soul, and body daily.
It’s rather funny really. My moments of stillness allowed the Lord to lead me to a lifestyle inhabited by the experience of stillness every day — precious moments with my Savior. This time looks different for everyone. For me, I experience this stillness through my yoga practice. For you, it may be quiet time in your bedroom or prayer closet. It may be with a cup of coffee while sitting on the back porch. Whatever it looks like for you, I encourage you to make the time and space to be still before the Lord.
The experience of stillness colors my day. When I look around and see the world falling apart while brokenness wreaks havoc among humanity, I do not fear because I can hold on to the truths God gives me when I am still before Him. He tells me in His word, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.
When trouble comes, I can stand strong because I have spent time being still before the Lord and He renewed me. He reminded me that those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31.
So I charge you to this: find a few moments each day to be still. Put your plans and to do list away. Get away from everyone and everything, even if it is only for a few minutes. Take your worries, concerns, and what if’s and place them at the feet of Jesus and forget them while you just exist in His presence. Bask in His love. Embrace His loving arms as they wrap around you with comfort and peace.
